27 Years of Buchenbeisl
The Birth of Buchenbeisl
Norbert Schmidt opens Gasthaus zum Buchenbeisl at Karmarschgasse 50 in Vienna-Favoriten under the company name Norbert Schmidt Gastronomie KG on 4 January 1999. From the beginning, hospitality, Viennese cuisine and a personal atmosphere are at the centre.
The Next Generation Joins
At just 19, son Manuel Schmidt begins actively working in the family business and taking responsibility. In the same year he organises the first Oktoberfest at Buchenbeisl – the beginning of a tradition that continues today.
Official Entry into the Family Business
Manuel Schmidt officially joins the company as a partner and has worked daily on the continued development of Buchenbeisl ever since.
A Meeting Place for the Neighbourhood
Buchenbeisl develops into a popular meeting place for regulars, families, clubs and neighbours. Countless events, celebrations and shared memories shape these years. Of course, our “Blacky” is always on board!
The Corona Pandemic
Like many hospitality businesses, Buchenbeisl faces major challenges. Thanks to loyal guests, solidarity and perseverance, the restaurant endures and Norbert Schmidt breathes life back into Buchenbeisl.
A Fresh Start
After the difficult pandemic years, life returns to the tavern. Events, celebrations and sociable evenings once again find their firm place at Buchenbeisl.

On Christmas Eve, Buchenbeisl loses its founder, and Manuel Schmidt loses his father, best friend and the person who shaped him like no other. With Norbert Schmidt’s passing, the family loses not only an innkeeper, entrepreneur and host, but a father, best friend, adviser and the heart of the house. For over 25 years he shaped Buchenbeisl with passion, humanity and tireless commitment. For many guests he was far more than an innkeeper – he was a familiar face, an open ear and a fixed part of the neighbourhood. His loss left a gap that can never fully be closed. Yet his spirit, his values and his love of Viennese tavern culture live on at Buchenbeisl every day.
A New Chapter Begins
On 27 September 2025, Manuel Schmidt officially takes over management of the company and leads Buchenbeisl into the next generation.
Today
For over 27 years, Buchenbeisl has stood for honest Viennese cuisine, heartfelt hospitality and cosy hours in the heart of Favoriten. What began in 1999 continues today with the same passion.
